Cervical Screening (Smear Tests): Why It Matters
Cervical screening (also known as a smear test) is an important way of helping to prevent cervical cancer. It checks for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), which can cause changes to cervical cells. Finding these changes early means they can be monitored or treated before cancer develops.
We understand that some people may feel anxious, embarrassed, or unsure about attending for cervical screening. These feelings are completely normal, and you are always welcome to discuss any concerns with a member of our clinical team.
If you decide not to attend for cervical screening when invited, we offer a follow-up telephone appointment with our practice nurse. During this call, you can talk through the screening process, its benefits, and any concerns you may have, so you can make an informed decision.
